Stella Maris – Port Adelaide

About Us
Stella Maris – Port Adelaide had its beginning under Father James Tuohy at Saint Joseph’s Orphanage, Largs Bay. The next location was the British Sailors’ Society in Port Adelaide. It then moved to the Yongala Street Community Centre at Taperoo. In 2006, Stella Maris moved to our present location. The Stella Maris Port Adelaide Seafarers Centre (Formerly Apostleship of the Sea) is located at 437 Victoria Rd, Taperoo, South Australia. We are a caring and Christian society made up of non-paid volunteers aligned to the Catholic Church, offering pastoral care, services and support for visiting seafarers irrespective of race, colour or creed.

Transport Assistance for Seafarers Visiting Port Adelaide
Stella Maris Port Adelaide is here to assist visiting seafarers with, among other things, their transport needs. However, our volunteers are not always available when required. Our centre is, at present, only open from 1 to 5pm, Monday to Friday, except Public Holidays.
This means that we are not able to assist with your transport needs in the morning, in the evening, on weekends or public holidays. We can still help you in other ways though.
In times of our unavailability, seafarers need to rely on one of the following modes of transport:
Bus (Adelaide Metro), train (Adelaide Metro), taxi or Uber
Buses
There is a bus interchange in Port Adelaide within walking distance of berths 18 to 29. The interchange is the Port Dock bus interchange in Lipson Street. It may be possible to catch buses from here to locations such as Adelaide (230 & 232), West Lakes (117 & 118), Harbour Town (118), etc..
Bear in mind that a trip to Harbour Town can take at least 1 ¼ hours. Another consideration is the purchase of a fare. According to https://www.adelaidemetro.com.au/fares-and-passes/adelaide-metro-fares , “Adelaide Metro fares are the same on buses, trains and trams. Each fare allows a travel period of two hours for any distance travelled. You can pay with a rechargeable metroCARD, Adelaide Metro tap and pay, or the Adelaide Metro Buy & Go app.
It appears that the latter is most appropriate for visiting seafarers. Adelaide Metro cards are interchangeable between Bus and Train.
Bear in mind also that there are no money exchange facilities in Port Adelaide. There are, however, 3 at West Lakes Shopping Centre.
Trains
Seafarers from Outer Harbor are able to use the train service by boarding at stations such as Outer Harbor and Osborne (Osborne Road, adjacent to the North Haven Shopping Centre). Again, the purchase of a fare is another consideration. You can pay with the Adelaide Metro Buy & Go app. Adelaide Metro cards are interchangeable between Bus and Train.
Seafarers who are on a ship berthed at Outer Harbor 8 (Grain Terminal)
The closest railway Station to this berth is North Haven and it is a 3-kilometre distance from the ship. The best way to find your way is to Google on your phone to get to the railway station. When returning to your ship from the North Haven station, Google ‘Pelican Point Road’ and follow directions.
Taxis
Bear in mind that a regular taxi (or Uber) can only take 4 passengers. Australian dollars are needed to pay for the fare. Taxi services include:
132211, 132227, 8400 6280
Ubers
You can request an Uber ride on 13-UBER (13 82 37) without the use of an app. Simply call 13-UBER to book a trip on demand.
The main thing about all of the above suggestions is that Australian dollars are needed for payment whenever cash is required.
Calls can be made to our centre on 0413393019 or 71277899 during operating hours (M-F 1-5pm). Messages can be left outside our operating hours.
Messages can be done via WhatsApp. Messages via Facebook Messenger are too slow to be effective.
We hope that the above details assist you with your transport needs whenever Stella Maris Port Adelaide is not available to help you.
